Our Goal

On GoFundMe, you can only send funds raised to your own bank account or a beneficiary’s USA bank account. The only way to send funds abroad on GoFundMe is to send it to yourself first and figure out another way to send it abroad—at least 14% of our users were raising funds for beneficiaries in other countries without a way to send it there within the GoFundMe platform.

1 in 7 people have used Remitly to send money to family and friends across the globe.

To expand our fund transfer range and accessibility, we formed a partnership with Remitly and were tasked with launching an MVP Remitly powered transfers product that supported transfers to India, Mexico, and the Philippines. This effort became GoFundMe’s top priority as an organization.

The Approach

Due to our limited timeframe, we operated in weekly sprints to create, incorporate feedback, and handoff each piece of this net new experience to engineering.

After scoping and exploring various journey ideas, we narrowed things down to the capabilities and order of screens we wanted to implement:

  1. Choose where the beneficiary lives

  2. Choose whether to send funds through the Remitly experience

  3. If so, add their beneficiary’s info

  4. Choose a transfer amount

  5. Choose whether to make it a cash pickup or a bank transfer

  6. Add cash pickup or bank info depending on their selection

  7. Finalize, review, and send the transfer

More about my role within our small team…

  • Helped create the structure of the flow and order above

  • Iterated on designs and interactions for various parts of the experience—namely our entirely new screens like the transfer calculator and Remitly upsell

  • Created our fee naming and structure with the international elements like exchange rate being introduced

  • Created a labeling system for Remitly transfer statuses depending on transfer type

    • Bank transfers: Processing ; Deposited ; Canceled

    • Cash pickups: Ready for pickup ; Picked up ; Canceled

  • Built a corresponding email hierarchy and content for beneficiaries and organizers

Process

Choosing whether to send funds through the Remitly experience

The Remitly upsell screen was a key screen as it was the entry point for users into the experience. I worked with the Remitly marketing team to incorporate their reasons to believe into our value props and created several versions with different value props highlighted. I also worked with brand design to finalize iconography, visual elements and Remitly logo treatment.

Fee structure

With the introduction of new fees in addition to our GoFundMe transaction fee, it was imperative we clearly delineate fees for users across the product consistently across the areas fees were displayed.

GoFundMe:

  • Transaction fee (2.9% + $0.30 per donation)

Remitly

  • Fixed fee for bank transfer or cash pickup ($2 / $3)

  • Exchange rate fee (differs depending on transfer type)

Here’s where fees showed up across the experience.

We explored various interaction types for how users can calculate their Remitly transfer—from radio buttons and multiple screens to tabs/toggles.

Ultimately we went with a design that used progressive disclosure through a loading state to capture the relationship between the ever changing nature of exchange rates and total transfer amount that includes all fees.
